Often referred to as the heart of Dunnellon, the Rainbow River is a popular attraction for floating on inner tubes or “tubing” from KP Hole Park. The Rainbow River is formed by a first magnitude spring (Rainbow Springs) that is ranked fourth in the state for volume of discharge. The 5.7 miles long Rainbow River winds its way into Dunnellon where it merges with the Withlacoochee River.

Rainbow Springs State Park is centered around the Rainbow Spring, where the river starts. The freshwater spring pumps out 400 - 600 million gallons of crystal clear water every day. Rainbow Springs State Park is a great location for swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, picnicking, hiking, and bird watching on the nature trails to enjoy the many native plants and animals. From the 1930's to the 1970's the area was actually a theme park with a zoo, glass bottom boat rides, gondola & monorail system and even a submarine ride. The relics of the old zoo are still visible today.

The Rainbow River runs into the Withlacoochee River, one of only a few rivers in North America that flows north. The 157 mile long waterway runs from Green Swamp in Hernando County, north to the Gulf at Yankeetown. The Withlacoochee River is a popular for fishing and largemouth bass, panfish, and brown bullheads are plentiful.

Lake Rousseau is another excellent fishing destination in Dunnellon. Created by the Withlacoochee River, as part of the original Cross Florida Barge Canal project, Lake Rousseau is full of cypress trees. The underwater forest of stumps, provide perfect cover for bluegill, redear sunfish, catfish, black crappie and largemouth bass. There is also a dam and lock system at one end on the lake.

Dunnellon is growing as people discover the natural wonders and all that it has to offer. Rainbow Springs Estates offers the best of both worlds, with beautiful natural surrounding and the modern conveniences just down the road in town. There is also a private, residents-only beach on the River. Dunnellon has many shops and restaurants including Super Walmart, Walgreens, Winn Dixie, Sonic, Baskin Robbins, Dunkin Donuts, Pizza Hut, McDonalds as well as many local dining establishments. There is even an 18-hole championship golf course, Juliette Falls.
