Inverness, Florida was established as the county seat of Citrus County and as such is a hub of activity. The Historic Inverness Downtown Square is perhaps the most notable area of interest with its many specialty shops, restaurants and pubs.

The old Citrus County Courthouse, now known as the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum, was built in 1912. The grand old courthouse was inspired by ancient Greek temple designs and sports a huge clock tower. It has been restored and now serves as a museum as it was replaced by the nearby municipal courthouse complex in 1992. In 1961, Elvis visited the courthouse as the old courtroom was used in scenes of the Elvis Presley movie, "Follow That Dream”.
